Who are
the Welsh Whisky Society?
Our story
The Welsh Whisky Society (WWS) officially launched in Autumn 2024, making its historic debut at the inaugural Wales Whisky Fest in Llandudno. This marked a significant milestone for a nation that has been producing world-class "liquid gold" for centuries, yet lacked a dedicated community to champion its heritage.
The Foundation
The Society was born from a shared passion for the breathtakingly beautiful Celtic nation of Wales and its unique distilling heritage. In early 2024, the WWS was originally established by three founders: Sean Williams, Sion Swann, and Nathaniel Dodd.
Brought together by a mutual love for Welsh spirit, the founders first met at the West Midlands Distillery in Birmingham. During that meeting, they identified a glaring gap in the industry: while almost every other corner of the United Kingdom had a whisky guild or society to push their culture forward, Wales remained the "Hidden Nation" and without a central hub for its enthusiasts.
The Society Today
While the Society was built on the vision of its three original founders, the organization is now run and led by Sean Williams.
Under Sean’s leadership, our mission remains as clear as it was on day one: to act as the definitive bridge between the people who make Welsh whisky and the people who love to drink it. Today, the WWS serves as a global community for those who want to explore, protect, and celebrate the past, present, and future of Whisgi Cymraeg.
Whether we are hosting tastings around the UK, uncovering lost history in our archives, or linking our members to passionate Welsh whisky producers, we are here to ensure that Welsh Whisky is no longer a footnote, but a headline.
